Caption: Ramon Llull (1232-1315), Majorcan philosopher. Llull (right) is depicted with parents and a baby, symbolising he creation of the Philosopher's Stone from the male and the female. Llull was born into a wealthy family and was well educated. He wrote several works on alchemy and botany and is credited with the first important works on election theory. However, as a convert to Catholicism he pursued an agenda of converting the Jews of Europe and was greatly anti-Semitic. This engraving comes from 'Symbola aureae' by Michael Maier, published at Frankfurt in 1617.
