Caption: Caterpillar in apple. Sectioned apple showing spoilage caused by the caterpillar of the codling moth (Cydia pomonella). This caterpillar bores into apples, as seen here, causing considerable damage in orchards. As well as apples, it also damages pears, walnuts and quinces. Numerous methods are used to control its numbers, including the use of pesticides, pheromone traps (to capture breeding adults) and biological control using bacteria.
