Caption: Sweet pepper. Woodcut illustration of a 'capsicum brasilianum' plant. This is probably what is now known as a sweet or bell pepper, a cultivar of Capsicum annuum. Peppers are native to parts of northern South America. This illustration was published in De simplicibus medicamentis ex occidentali India delatis, quorum in medicina usus est, by Nicholas de Monardes printed in Antwerp in 1574.
