Caption: Fungus damaged lettuce. Butter lettuce crop damaged by the Sclerotinia drop disease. The Sclerotinia fungus is most potent in a moist atmosphere. The fungus will spread rapidly and cover the host plant with a cotton-like growth of fungus filaments (mycelium). The fungus will break down the host plant's tissues often completely liquifying them. In hot, dry climates, as here, these liquid products will evaporate leaving dried out remains of the destroyed tissue. Photographed in Salinas Valley, California, USA.
