Caption: Maori own. Engraved plate showing a maori fortified town (or hippah) on the coast near Tolaga in New Zealand. Seen in the water are two boats, one rowed by British sailors (left), the other by Maoris. This plate was published in An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty : for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, by John Hawkesworth, printed at London in 1773.
