Caption: Particle accelerator generator. Particle accelerators are used to accelerate particles such as protons to near the speed of light. They will then be collided with other particles or a stationary target. The resulting release of energy leads to the creation of new particles, increasing our understanding of the fundamental nature of the universe. This is a pulse generator at the Institute of High-Energy Physics (IHEP) in Protvino, in Russia's Moscow region. The IHEP opened in 1965. Its accelerators include the U-70 synchrotron. Photographed in 1984.
