Caption: Amber extraction. Pieces of amber (orange) seen in mud by a man's boots during the opening of the amber extraction season. This amber is part of the Primorskoye deposit near Yantarny, a settlement in Kaliningrad Oblast, a Russian enclave on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Amber is the fossilised resin of various conifer trees. Most of the world's known deposits of amber are found in and around the Baltic Sea, where it is mined for use as jewellery, but also for industrial and chemical applications. Photographed in April 2010.
