Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Surgeon in an operating theatre checks an axial MRI scan of the skull and inner ear of a woman with severe hearing difficulties. He is planning the first surgical operation in the UK to implant a cochlear device to stimulate the acoustic nerves on both sides of the head. Because only one processor and one internal receiver/stimulator has to be implanted, this device is significantly cheaper than two separate implants. The operation was photographed at the Southampton General Hospital, UK. .
