Caption: Surgeon makes the first implantation in the UK of a binaural cochlear hearing device in a woman with severe hearing difficulties. He is threading an electrode array beneath the scalp to connect with an internal receiver and another array which will be implanted in the other ear. Stimulation of this bilateral combination by electrical signals should allow perception of normal stereo hearing for the patient. The sounds collected by small microphones near each ear are converted into electrical signals by a microprocessor and carried to a small external transmitter held on the surface of the head, directly above the internal part of the device. Because only one processor and one internal receiver/stimulator has to be implanted, this device is significantly cheaper than two separate implants.
