Caption: Collagen synthesis and assembly, artwork. At left is a fibroblast, the cell that synthesises helical protein chains of collagen (wavy lines). Three of these chains combine to form one triple helix collagen molecule (centre). Collagen molecules aggregate into fibrils (single yellow and white strand), with then group together to form collagen fibres (right). Collagen makes up one quarter of all proteins in the human body. It is the most abundant protein in the body. It has has a high tensile strength, providing structure and elasticity to skin, tendons, ligaments and bones.
