Caption: Mouldy butternut squash. Macrophotograph of a Penicillium sp. fungus growing on a butternut squash (Cucurbita sp.). The fungus has produced a network (white), known as a mycelium, which consists of many fine filaments (hyphae). It has also produced many spores (green/grey), which may spread to infect other fruit or vegetables. The fungus penetrates the vegetable, digesting and absorbing nutrients. Most or all of the squash will have decayed within a few days. Magnification unknown.
