Caption: Mouldy bread. Mould (green) growing on a slice of bread. Mould is the growth produced on organic matter by several different types of fungus. This mould formed from microscopic airborne fungal spores that landed and germinated on the surface of the bread. The fungus then began to digest the bread, replacing it with a network (mycelium) of fine filaments (hyphae) that form the green mould seen here. Eventually, the mould will form and release its own reproductive spores, and the cycle will continue.
