Caption: Electronic display of the decay of a W particle. The event was recorded in the CDF, the Collider Detector at Fermilab, near Chicago. The display at right shows a section through the CDF's central tracking chambers & drift tubes. A proton & antiproton, accelerated in Fermilab's Tevatron collider, have annihilated in the centre. Their energy materialises as a number of particles. One is the W, which lives too briefly to be visible; its existence is deduced from the electron (straight track & pink box at bottom right, & detailed image at left) & invisible neutrino into which it decays. The other tracks are due to other particles produced in the original collision.
