Caption: Pariacoto Virus protein capsid (cut in half) and its structured RNA genome. Mostly used as a model virus in the laboratory, the virus was originally isolated in Peru from the Southern Armyworm (Spodoptera eridania). The atomic structure was modeled with the internal double-stranded portion of RNA (the genome is single stranded but it can fold back onto itself to become locally double-stranded.) The RNA is modeled as a dodecahedral cage which has the same 5-, 3-, and 2-fold symmetry as that of the protein icosahedral shell. Rendering with ambient occlusion shadowing helps distinguish surface features. View is roughly along the 5-fold icosahedral symmetry axis. Individual, small spheres are atoms making up the proteins.
