The single stranded RNA genome inside the capsid is not visible here. Poliovirus causes poliomyelitis, which is highly contagious and spreads easily by human-to-human contact. Most infections cause no symptoms but about 1% enter the central nervous system destroying motor neurons leading to muscle weakness and acute flaccid paralysis. The polio vaccines developed by Jonas Salk in 1952 (dead virus) and Albert Sabin (live, attenuated virus) in 1962 are credited with reducing the global number of polio cases per year from many hundreds of thousands to around a thousand.
