Caption: Early blight on a potato plant (Solanum tuberosum). This blight is caused by the fungus Alternaria solani. The spores lie dormant on tubers under the soil during the winter. They then spread rapidly in warm and wet conditions. Symptoms include the appearance of dark blotches on leaves that turn brown and spread into growing black patches of dead tissue, eventually killing the plant. Photographed in Alberta, Canada.
