Caption: Electronic display of an event in the UA1 detector at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. The display shows an outline of the giant detector in yellow. A proton & an antiproton, accelerated to an energy of 270 GeV each in CERN's Super-Proton-Synchrotron (SPS) collider, have met at the centre of the detector & annihilated. Their combined energy rematerialises as a spray of many new particles. The particles are recorded by the detector's various instruments & their tracks are displayed by the computer, colour coded according to each particle's energy.
