Caption: Oak-apples, a common gall effecting oak trees, Quercus sp. A gall is an abnormal outgrowth or swelling formed by a plant as a result of attack by parasites such as bacteria, fungi, nematodes, insects and mites. These galls are caused (and inhabited) by larvae of parasitic wasps. Oak- apples are valued for the high-content of tannin within them.
