Caption: 1698 William Dampier, naturalist, explorer and buccaneer (August 1651 - March 1715). Engraving of his central America map from A New Voyage Round the World" 1697 with later hand colouring. Dampier was famously described as "a pirate of exquisite mind" and became a fashionable friend of the Royal Society after his accounts of his explorations were published. As a sailor and Buccaneer he was the first man to go three times around the world - under the pirate Captains; Sharp, Swan, Davis and Cooke. He took careful notes of the natural history he saw, becoming the first man to describe many features of Australia, New Guinea and Galapagos. The Galapagos, featured here as a fairly random cluster of islands, were used as a pirate hideaway by Dampier during raids on Panama. Darwin much later referred to him as "dear old Dampier" being so familiar with his naturalistic accounts.
