Caption: Potato late blight on leaves. Potato leaves damaged by the potato late blight fungus (Phytophthora infestans). This fungus can seriously damage potato crops, and was the cause of the crippling potato famine in Ireland in the 1840s. The fungus invades the leaves and penetrates the stems, remaining in the tubers (potatoes) over the winter. Prevention of potato late blight depends on the spraying of crops with fungicides and selectively breeding resistant potato plants.
