Caption: Gall damage on potato plant. This potato plant (Solanum tuberosum) shows evidence of stem gall. Galls are caused by the larvae of parasitic insects that produce substances which stimulate tumorous growth in the surrounding plant tissue. The masses of tissue, called galls, provide the larvae with a food supply and protection from predators. Galls may also be caused by bacteria, fungi and mites.
