Caption: Computer simulation of a neutral Z particle interaction in the OPAL detector at CERN, the European centre for particle physics near Geneva. OPAL is one of 4 giant particle detectors at the LEP electron-positron collider. The display shows the various elements of the cylindrical OPAL detector outlined in white. The green dots, yellow boxes & dark blue squares are "hits" recorded by the detector's instruments. The computer derives from these "hits" the tracks (pale blue & red) of particles created in the electron-positron annihilation. The Z particle, one of the carriers of the weak nuclear force, will be produced in large quantities in the LEP collisions.
