Caption: Computer simulation of a particle collision in the OPAL detector at CERN, the European centre for particle physics near Geneva. OPAL is one of 4 giant particle detectors at the LEP electron- positron collider. The display shows OPAL's two "end-caps" in white at left & right. The small white rings indicate the position of the cylindrical "vertex chamber", in the centre of the detector, where the high-energy electron- positron annihilations occur. The yellow tracks represent the paths of particles created in such an annihilation as they travel outwards through the various elements of the detector.
