Caption: Computer simulation of a neutral Z particle "event" in the OPAL detector at CERN, the European centre for particle physics near Geneva. OPAL is one of 4 giant particle detectors at the LEP electron- positron collider. In the display, the green dots & yellow boxes are "hits" recorded by some of the detector's instruments. The computer derives from these "hits" the tracks (broken & unbroken lines) of particles created in the electron-positron annihilation. The tight green spiral is the track of a low-energy electron. The Z particle, one of the carriers of the weak nuclear force, will be produced in large quantities in LEP's high-energy collisions.
