Caption: Mildew on leaf. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a fractured transverse section through the leaf of a Michaelmas daisy, Aster sp. , infected with a mildew fungus. Cells of the daisy leaf are at upper frame; long hair-like hyphae of the fungus are seen on the underside of the leaf (lower frame). Mildew is a common plant disease caused by a number of fungal species; it refers to the appearance of the infected plant, the leaves of which look as if they have been dusted with a powdery or downy growth.
