Caption: Rust on Groundsel leaf. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a pustule of the rust fungus Coelosporium senecionis on a late summer leaf of the common weed Groundsel (Senecio vulgaris). The pustule (at centre) is filled with round spores known as teleutospores. Rust fungi have a complex lifestyle producing many types of spores. These teleutospores form late in the growing season and contain several cells (2-10); they are a resting stage which overwinter before infesting another host the following spring. This rust also attacks many types of ornamental daisies, the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and the Austrian pine (Pinus nigra). Magnification: x55 at 6x4.5cm size.
