Caption: Rust fungus leaf infection. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a rose leaf infected by the rust fungus Phragmidium sp. Long cells that make up the leaf are seen at upper image (green). These leaf cells have been infiltrated by threads of fungal mycelium and reproductive spores (yellow) of the rust fungus. Rust fungi (Uredinales) are common parasites on both wild and cultivated plants, often causing severe disease. They have extremely complex life cycles which may involve up to two hosts and five distinct types of spore. Freeze- fracture section. Magnification x325 at 5x7cm size
