Caption: Rust fungus. Macrophotograph of a red rust fungus (Phragmidium violaceum) infecting a bramble leaf. Rust fungi are plant parasites that are often host specific. It is the reproductive spores of these fungi that produce the colour seen. The production of these spores ruptures the epidermal surface of the leaf. This reduces photosynthesis and can lead to reduced yields in economically important crops. Magnification: x2 at 35mm size.
