Caption: Tobacco mosaic virus. Leaf of a tobacco plant (Nicotiana sp.) showing damage caused by the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). The virus takes its name from the pattern of light and dark patches it causes on the leaves. It is spread by contact between infected plants, and can remain active in contaminated soil for several years. TMV is harmful to tobacco agriculture, reducing the quality and yield in infected plants.
