Caption: Blight on a tomato plant (Solanum lycopersicum). This blight is caused by the water mould Phytophthora infestans. The spores of this fungus lie dormant under the soil during the winter. They then spread rapidly in warm and wet conditions. The fungus has killed the leaves and appears as brown patches on the stems of the plant. The tomato fruit is also infected with brown patches and is rotting. This fungus is better known as potato blight and was responsible for the 1845 Irish potato famine.
