Caption: Onions damaged by smut. Onion smut (Urocystis cepulae) is a fungus that infects onions and leeks. There are several types of smut that affect different types of plants. It initially attacks a plant's reproductive system, forming galls (growths containing the fungus) which darken and burst, releasing spores that infect neighbouring plants. A smut infestation is controlled by removing and destroying the infected plants. In agriculture, this process is known as the destruction of the initial inoculum. Photographed in Colorado, USA.
