Caption: Light micrograph of the desmid Micrasterias sp seen among filamentous algae & debris. Desmids are unicellular green algae with beautifully shaped cell walls. The cell of this desmid is in two halves, separated by a narrow waist. Cell division occurs when the cell splits at the waist, each half generating a replica of itself to restore the original shape. This cell divided some time ago & the new half cell (upper right) is almost grown. The green areas in the cell are chloroplasts, where chlorophyll pigment used in photosynthesis is stored. The transparent edge is the cell wall, with an inner cellulose layer & an outer pectin layer. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size.
