Caption: Puerto Rican crested toad, Bufo (Peltophryne) lemur is listed as a critically endangered species by the IUCN. Once common on Puerto Rico and Virgin Gorda, its numbers have been greatly reduced by introduced marine toads and mongooses plus habitat degradation. it is now thought that no more than 250 adults exist in the wild and its range has shrunk to 10 square kilometers. The largest numbers can be found in the Guanica Dry Forest of southwestern PR. Several zoos are now breeding it in captivity and releasing it back into the wild.
