Caption: Mosquito taking flight. Female Aedes aegypti mosquito taking flight after feeding on human blood, which can be seen in her abdomen. The female mosquito feeds by piercing the skin and sucking blood through the proboscis (tube-shaped mouthpiece). She uses the blood meal for the production of eggs. This species of mosquito is found throughout tropical Africa and in parts of South America. It is a vector for the transmission of yellow fever, Chikungunya, Dengue fever and zika viruses to humans.
