Caption: European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). Computer artwork of ESO's planned E-ELT, a giant optical telescope scheduled to be operational by 2018. It will use adaptive optics and a segmented mirror to achieve an optical diameter of 42 metres, far larger than current largest optical telescope (11 metres, completed 2008), and the largest of several planned ELTs. The primary mirror will consist of 1000 segments, each 1.45 metres wide, with the adaptive optics involving thousands of adjustments being made every second. The secondary mirror will be 6 metres in diameter. The European ELT location of Cerro Armazones, Chile, was selected in 2010.Restrictions:.
