Caption: Harvey Hayes. Historical image of the American physicist, acoustic scientist and pioneer of underwater acoustics Harvey Cornelius Hayes. Hayes invented the Sonic Depth Finder (SDF), the first device for mapping the ocean floor using sound waves, and made the first complete bottom profile of any ocean. He was the first recipient of the 'Pioneer in Underwater Acoustics' award from the Acoustical Society of America and was responsible for one of the two operational sonar equipments used by the US Navy at the outbreak of the Second World War. Hayes was also the first superintendent of the Naval Research Laboratory's Sound Division, retiring in 1947.
