Caption: John Hays Hammond Jr. (1855-1936). Historical image of the American mining engineer, diplomat, and philanthropist John Hays Hammond. Hammond was an early advocate of deep-level mining, developing mines in South Africa, Mexico and California. He was given complete charge of Cecil Rhodes' mines in South Africa, making each a financial success. He was a member of the Johannesburg Reform Committee and was involved in the botched attempt to trigger an expatriate workers uprising in South Africa, known as the Jameson Raid. Published circa 1905-1945.
