This image is part of the feature The Beauty Of Particles

Caption: Particle collision. Computer display of the particles created at the very centre of an electron-positron collision in the L3 detector at CERN, the European centre for particle physics near Geneva. L3 is one of 4 giant particle detectors at the LEP electron-positron collider. In the image, the variously coloured boxes and circles mark "hits" by particles in the detector's instruments. The coloured lines are the tracks of the particles created in the electron-positron annihilation. This close-up shows the beginning of the tracks as particles are created from pure energy or from the decay of unseen particles.
