Caption: Lincoln Ellsworth (1880-1951). Historical image of the American explorer Lincoln Ellsworth on a ship. Ellsworth is best known for the mountains in Antarctica that bear his name, which he discovered on 23rd November 1935 during a trans-Antarctic flight. He made four expeditions to Antarctica between 1933 and 1939 and in 1926 he accompanied Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) on his second effort to fly over the North Pole in the airship Norge. The Ellsworth Station Antarctic base, Mount Ellsworth and Lake Ellsworth, both in Antarctica, are also named after him.
