Caption: Z particle. Computer display of a Z-zero particle decay in the DELPHI detector at CERN, the European centre for particle physics near Geneva. DELPHI is one of 4 giant particle detectors at the LEP electron-positron collider. In the display, the boxes are "hits" made by particles in the detector's instruments. The yellow, red and green lines represent the tracks of particles. The Z particle, one of the carriers of the weak nuclear force, is created in the original electron- positron annihilation; but it lives too briefly to create a track itself, and is inferred from the other particles.
