Caption: Historical engraving showing a vacuum pump experiment carried out by the 17th century German scientist and inventor Otto von Guericke (1602 -1686). Otto von Guericke invented the first vacuum pump in 1654. He conducted his Magdeburg hemispheres experiment to show that two teams of horses could not separate two hemispheres from which the air had been evacuated.
