Caption: Pyotr Kuzmich Kozlov (1863-1935), Russian explorer and geographer. Kozlov was inspired by the travels of Nikolai Przhevalsky (1839-1899), and travelled on one of his expeditions and continuing to explore Central Asia after Przhevalsky died. Kozlov's explorations included the Gobi Desert (1907-9), and Mongolia and Tibet (1923-6). On the Gobi Desert expedition, he discovered the ruins of the city of Khara-Khoto. The excavations there resulted in the discovery of hundreds of books in the Tangut language. On the later expedition, Kozlov excavated the Noin-Ula royal burial mounds in northern Mongolia. Photographed in Russia.
