Caption: Mikhail Alekseevich Lavrentyev (1900-1980), Soviet mathematician and hydrodynamicist. Lavrentyev's work included studies of the physics of explosions, which was later applied to the construction of dams. He was elected to the USSR Academy of Sciences, and was Chair of its Siberian Branch (1957-1975), founding its Institute of Hydrodynamics. He founded the research town Akademgorodok, in Siberia, and was also a Vice-President of the USSR Academy of Sciences. His many awards include Hero of Socialist Labour, the Lenin Prize, the USSR State Prize, and the Lomonosov Gold Medal. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, in 1970.
