Caption: Leonid Ivanovitch Sedov (1907-1999), Soviet physicist. Sedov carried out pioneering work during World War II, studying the mathematics of blast waves. The Sedov Similarity Solution and the Sedov-Taylor solution are named for him. After the war, he worked on the Soviet space program, and was its first chairman, announcing its existence to the outside world in 1955. From 1959 to 1961 he was president of the International Astronautical Federation. His awards include Hero of Socialist Labour. He had been elected a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1953. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, in 1970.
