Caption: Childhood vaccination. Nurse preparing to inject a vaccine into an infant being held by his mother. A vaccine stimulates the body's immune system to produce antibodies. This allows the immune system to respond quickly against future infections. Many diseases are now vaccinated against in childhood, greatly reducing deaths and disabilities resulting from these diseases. Examples include poliomyelitis, measles, diphtheria, and tetanus. This clinic vaccinates children aged from 1 month to 17 years, with the injections varying depending on age. Photographed in Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave on the shores of the Baltic Sea.
