Caption: Mars-500 chess game. Former World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov (born 1951) playing chess with future participants of the third stage of the Mars-500 project. This third stage (lasting 520 days) is intended to recreate the full length of a crewed flight to Mars, with the six crew members (seen on screen) kept in isolation the entire time. The experiment is taking place at the Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBMP) in Moscow, Russia. This third stage of the Mars-500 project started on 3 June 2010. Photographed in May 2010.
