Caption: Light micrograph of the desmid Micrasterias sp. during cell division. The desmids are a group of unicellular green algae characterised by their beautifully shaped cell walls. Cell division is accomplished by splitting in two, a process known as binary fission in which the cell generates a perfect replica of itself to restore its original shape. Magnification: x80 at 35mm size.
