Caption: Light micrograph showing conjugating filaments of Spirogyra sp. , a green alga which forms slimy threads in stagnant or slow moving water. Spiro- gyra is so called because of spiral chloroplasts (green) found within each cell. Conjugation, a form of sexual reproduction, occurs in spring when threads come together in pairs. Both filaments put out papillae which meet to form conjugation tubes. Cytoplasm from the cells of one of the threads (termed male) migrates through the tubes to fuse with the cytoplasm in (female) cells of the other thread. Zygospores produced lie dormant until the next spring. Magnification: x30 at 35mm size.
