Caption: Light micrograph of an assortment of desmids. The two disc-shaped objects at centre are Micrasterias denticulata. The desmids are a group of unicellular green algae showing great variety of shape, but related by common features of cell structure and reproduction. They are often characterised by beautifully-shaped cell walls. The cell is divided into two sections, with a single nucleus & one or two chloroplasts. The cell walls have an inner layer rich in cellulose and an outer, thickened pectin layer. Cell division is accomplished by splitting in two. Each daughter cell then generates a replica of itself to restore its original shape.
