Caption: Desmid. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the single-celled alga Closterium sp. This alga is a desmid (family: Desmidiaceae). The smooth canoe-shaped cell is at centre (yellow). The cell contains chloroplasts, sites of photosyn- thesis. Many species of Closterium are planktonic, floating in the water column as green algae and as part of the freshwater food chain. They are wide- spread but thrive best in soft water or peat bogs. Here it is seen among other algae found in a water tank. The filamentous alga Ulothrix sp. is seen running diagonally from bottom centre to top right. Magnification: x370 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x1,270 at 8x10 inch size.
